욕망의 끝은 어디인가.
우리는 왜 더 잘살게 되었는데도 행복하지 않은가. 미국과 유럽인들은 지난세기와 비교하여 엄청난 물질적 풍요를 누리고 있음에도 불구하고 불행하다고 생각한다고 한다. 불행하다고 생각하는 주요 원인으로는 예전에 비해 발전 속도가 더디기 때문이라고 한다. 부모세대에 비해 몇 배의 물질적 풍요를 누리고 있음에도 오히려 부모세대가 더 행복한 시절이라고 생각한다고 한다. 그 이유로는 부모세대는 경제 발전 속도가 빨라 희망적 이였지만, 지금은 경제발전속도가 느려 상대적 만족도가 떨어진다는 것이다.
예를 들면 3년에 걸쳐 매년 임금이 10% 인상되었던 사람이 4년째부터 임금이 5%씩 인상된다면 임금에 대한 불만이 생긴다는 것이다. 10% 인상될 때에 비해 상대적 박탈감을 느끼기 때문이다.
시선을 미국이나 유럽이 아니라 대한민국으로 돌려보자. “한강의 기적” 세계 경제발전사에 유례가 없을 정도로 초고속의 발전을 거듭해 온 대한민국의 국민들의 미래는 행복일까. 불행일까. 안타깝지만 대한민국은 전 세계에서 가장 불행한 나라가운데 하나가 될 가능성이 매우 놓다. 그 이유를 간단히 살펴보자.
이글을 읽고 있는 당신은 매월 얼마정도를 소비하고 있는가. 얼마정도 소비하면 만족하겠는가. 매월 1,000만원 정도면 만족하겠는가. 지금 수입의 10배정도 소비하면 만족하겠는가.
“그렇게만 된다면 정말 좋겠다구요?”
54년간의 기적, 아직도 목마른가.
1953년 대한민국의 국민 1인당 평균 소득(GNP)은 67달러였다. 그로부터 48년후인 2001년 1만불을 돌파하였고, 그로부터 6년후인 2007년 2만불을 돌파하였다.(자료 : 통계청) 숫자를 보면 좀 많이 올라다고 생각할 것이다. 하지만 좀이 아니다. 2007년 GNP는 1953년에 비해 무려 300배나 증가하였다. 한세대를 30년으로 가정할 때 두 세대만에 이룬 성과다.
300백배의 성과에 만족하며 저축은 늘었는가.
“한강의 기적”을 이루면서 7~80년대에는 저축률이 20~30%에 달했었다. 90년대 초반 IMF를 거치면서 2%때로 급락하였다가 다시 1998년에는 23.2%까지 올랐었다. 그러나 2007년 저축률은 2.3%로 급락하였다.(자료 : 한국은행) 2007년이면 돈이 펀드로 몰려서 그런건 아닌지 생각하시는 분이 계실 것이다. 그러나 안타깝게도 엄청난 펀드열풍에도 불구하고 2.3%는 예적금과 펀드를 모두 포함한 저축율이다.
그렇다면 대한민국 국민들은 버는 만큼 쓰는가.
1년 소득 중 세금을 제외한 가처분 소득(쓸 수 있는 돈)대비 금융부채 비율을 살펴보자. 2002년 말 118.3%(처음 100% 돌파)이던 금융부채율이 2007년 말 148.1%로 뛰었고, 현재는 150%에 달한다고 한다.(자료 : 한국은행) 대한민국 국민들은 버는 만큼 쓰는 것이 아니라 미래의 부까지 끌어다 쓰고 있는 것이다. 즉 엄청나게 소득이 늘었음에도 불구하고 소비는 더 빠르게 증가하고 있는 것이다.
그럼 현재 대한민국의 행복지수는 어느 정도일까.
영국 레스터(Leicester) 대학의 심리학자인 에이드리언 화이트 교수는 자신이 작성한 `세계 행복지도'에서 다음과 같이 밝혔다.
세계 178개국을 조사한 지도에 따르면 덴마크가 행복지수 1위 국가로 랭크됐으며, 그 다음으로 스위스, 오스트리아, 아이슬랜드, 바하마, 핀란드, 스웨덴, 부탄, 브루나이, 캐나다 등이 뒤를 이었다.
미국은 23위, 영국은 41위, 독일은 35위였으며, 아시아권에서 중국은 82위, 일본은 90위였고, 한국은 이보다도 훨씬 낮은 102위를 기록했다.
흔히 행복지수를 다음과 같이 표현한다.
행복지수=소득/욕망x100.
우리의 소득은 늘어나고 있지만 욕망은 더 빠르게 증폭한다. 때문에 행복지수는 오히려 더 떨어지고 있는 것이다. 더욱 염려스러운 것은 대한민국의 성장률은 갈수록 떨어지고 있다는 점이다. 세계 그 어느 나라보다 빠른 성장을 맛보았던 대한민국 국민들이 욕망에 대한 통제를 조절하지 않으면 대한민국 국민들은 엄청난 불행을 맛보아야 한다.
